Twentieth Century Romantic Music for Two Pianos

These recordings were made at different times and in different locales, and they sound quite different from each other. Most successful are the Britten pieces, rarely played early works, and the amusing Lutoslawski. The Rachmaninoff is usually played more colorfully, rather on pianos or by an orchestra, but I liked the linear style of this performance quite well. The arrangement of the Danse Macabre is a very good one, but the playing here sounds tentative. The Bax piece sounds like Debussy with too much water. Both in consistency of performance and recording this disc could have been better. --Leslie Gerber
