This album of country-folk songs seems very simple at first, but an underlying musical complexity is soon revealed. Under each strummed chord progression, is the sighing of a harmonium; each bass line is richly textured (the upright bass favored by the band makes all of the difference in distinguishing C&S"s sound); every instrumental interlude begins with a basic melody, but soon bells, violin, pedal steel guitar joins in as the layers pile upon each other. Hearts is an exemplary exercise in utilizing a diverse crowd of instruments without becoming bogged down in unnecessary convolution, in creating clear, catchy melodies without letting the details overtake the whole.
