The Isham Jones Orchestra, along with the Casa Lomans, was the leading hot dance band that prepared the way for the swing era. When Jones retired in 1936, the rest of the band voted a young Woody Herman to carry on as leader, and this edition became known as "The Band that Played the Blues."
