The objective of South African-born Sharon Katz and the multiethnic Peace Train is to show that people of all races and religions can live together peacefully. It"s a tall order for musicians of any country, much less those of Katz"s homeland. On Imbizo, which translates as a "cultural gathering of hearts and minds," the politically active singer/guitarist/songwriter is single-minded in her call for unity even as she and the band create a varied repertoire. At times Peace Train doesn"t sound all that different than Paul Simon"s backing band from his Graceland album, and the group even includes members from Simon"s touring band. At other times, the African-music-influenced rock and pop is a bit derivative. Katz and company are actually at their best when they step out of their comfort zone. "Simple Things in Life" is a jazzy duet between Katz, who sings and plays guitar, and trumpeter Matt Cappy that"s as poignant as it is understated. The catchy reggae rhythm on "Why O Why" also works surprisingly well. --Tad Hendrickson
