Erno von Dohnányi was one of the most extraordinary Renaissance men in musical history. In addition to being a composer and virtuoso pianist, he was director of the Franz Liszt Academy, conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and music director of Hungarian Radio. He was revered as a teacher anyone who was anyone in Hungary was taught by him, among them Georg Solti. As a pianist-composer, his music grew out of the traditions of Liszt and Brahms, but his command of instrumental color and rhythmic élan is all his own.
