Beginning "Blue Skies" with a lovely Flicka-like soprano, Anne Tofflemire delivers a winning collection of Irving Berlin standards. "He Ain"t Got Rhythm" is snappily accompanied by bass and drums, and punctuated with quotes from other Berlin songs; "Moonshine Lullaby" is deliciously languorous; and "God Bless America" is nicely understated. If any further legitimacy is needed, Berlin veteran Michael Feinstein is on hand to share counterpoint on "Pack Up Your Sins and Go to the Devil." The only disappointment here is that the disc is only 41 minutes--it"d be great to hear Tofflemire covering "They Say It"s Wonderful," "How Deep Is the Ocean," "What"ll I Do"--but that"s a good argument for volume 2. --David Horiuchi
