This collection of recordings from various African artists is the musical complement to a photography book of the same title. With countless fantastic African artists to choose from, the CD is no slouch, even if all 14 tracks were previously released. Highlights include selections from vets Cesaria Evora and Bonga, as well numbers from bona fide rising stars Gigi and Takfarinas. Khadja Nin"s moody "Sambolera Mayi Son" will enchant those unfamiliar with her laid-back grooves. Other lesser-known acts that impress are Vusi Mahlasela, who specialize in acoustic Afro-pop, and the Soweto String Quartet, which has classical leanings. Undoubtedly, it"s nearly impossible to put together a thorough one-disc collection of African music, but A Day in the Life of Africa makes for entertaining listening, whether you"re checking out the book or you"re just in the mood for great music. --Tad Hendrickson
