Trailblazer Thurgood Marshall was the first African American to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Before becoming a Supreme Court justice, Marshall successfully argued many cases before the Court that challenged racial segregation, including a landmark case that resulted in the end of segregation in public schools.
