Hate Is Your Mistress [Explicit Lyrics]

While Hate Is Your Mistress is a thoroughly entertaining tribute album, one gets the idea that the band name and logo (the classic Misfits logo given a kicky Marlo Thomas as That Girl "do) came first and the album was recorded just so they"d have an opportunity to use them. That said, this set of poppy girl-punk covers of Misfits songs is quite entertaining. Led by bassist Nicole Arslan (Peachfuzz) and guitarist Rifka Arslan (the Magneatos), the Ms. Fits attack these ten songs with giddy enthusiasm that matches the deceptive catchiness of the original songs; although some people forget this given Glenn Danzig"s later metal focus, but the original Misfits weren"t that far removed from the likes of the Ramones or the Dictators. So Hate Is Your Mistress reclaims the legacy of the Misfits from a generation of over-serious death metal freaks, and it"s a hugely fun listen, but overall, it falls into the same lightweight category as, say, the Queers" song-by-song remake of the Ramones" Rocket to Russia: it"s worth hearing once or twice, but it"s not gonna make you forget the originals. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
