Major Myers collected Egyptian antiquities in the 19th century when they became all the rage. Published in conjunction with a namesake exhibition at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham (UK), from June 2010 to January 2012, the volume showcases his collection plus items from the Institute"s collection of coins from Alexandria. Lecturers in relevant fields at the university introduce essays on early Egyptian material culture that marked the sacred in life and death, artistic and economic impacts of conquests (e.g., papyrus texts in Hellenistic and Roman Egypt), and tourism and archeology in 19th century Egypt.
