This collection of essays takes on what may seem an unlikely subject: the ways the Internet is shaping folklore and is shaped by it. But it requires an understanding that folklore is not necessarily a study of the past, but a study of traditional beliefs and practices, folk knowledge and culture. From that wider perspective, the essays explore the folkloric aspects of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and other digital media, and illustrate that folk culture, supported by a new and evolving everyday language, has been a key influence on language, practice, and interaction online.
