Kindred Spirits Vol.1 brings together two traditions and two worlds in a powerful blend of western jazz and ethnic Gnawa music from the Maghreb. The Gnawa are the descendants of slaves brought to the Arab north from sub-Saharan Africa, and their music mixes central African rhythms with Arabian influences. Free-jazz master Archie Shepp first met the group Dar Gnawa at the Essaouira Festival in 2000, and their deep musical and spiritual connection culminated in this album. Kindred Spirits is all about rhythm and communication, with the ultimate goal of exploring cultural connections.
