This attractive, accessible text is designed for classes in children"s literature at the pre-service and graduate levels in education or English departments and in library science programs. It can also serve as a resource for classroom teachers and librarians. This tenth edition adds about 1,000 new titles. The first section of the book gives criteria for choosing books at various stages of children"s development, and offers a brief historical overview of the changing world of children"s literature. The second section describes in depth various genres within children"s literature, such as picture books, modern fantasy, contemporary realistic fiction, and nonfiction. Evaluative criteria are given for each genre, and have been expanded reformatted to be used as course activities. The third section provides ideas for planning a literature program. Chapters include activities, real-life examples of classroom practices, discussion points, and profiles. In addition to a subject index, the book includes an author and title index, plus a list of publishers" addresses, an annotated list of book selection aids (such as directories, booklists, and professional web sites), and a list of children"s book award winners. The color art program, redesigned for this edition, features illustrations from children"s book on almost every page, plus examples of children"s artwork, and original illustrations by artist Rafael López.
