Raised in one of Cuba"s leading musical families, with his father being a legendary bandleader at the famous Tropicana club in Havana, Chucho began playing piano at the tender age of 3. Winning his first of two Grammys in 1979 (nominated for 5 in his career), many of his recordings are taken straight from live performances, as he is known as a phenomenal improviser. Founding the well-known Afro-Cuban jazz band Irakere, he has attained saint-like status in Cuba for taking the nation"s music to the rest of the world whilst remaining a mentor to young musicians back home. He has amazing technical flair, alongside lightning speed on the keys with a signature sound that combines classical, Afro-Cuban folklore, popular music and jazz to stunning effect.
