Classic Hits 2

Following on from 20 Classic Hits, Pressure Sounds bundles up another batch of seminal numbers from Gregory Isaacs at his mighty roots era heights. Bar the final track, Classic Hits, Vol. 2 is presented in chronological order, kicking off with a pair of Bunny Lee productions from 1975. At this point in his career, Isaacs was trundling happily around Jamaica"s studios, recording with a plethora of producers. "All I Have Is Love" paired him with Phil Pratt, the magnificent "Slave Master" came courtesy of Lloyd Campbell, and the legendary Niney "The Observer" Holness oversaw "Rock On." Simultaneously, Isaacs was also releasing a steady stream of self-produced singles, although when he came to cut his Mr. Isaacs album in 1978, Ossie Hibbert gave him a hand. His cover of Smokey Robinson"s "Get Ready," "Set the Captives Free" and "The Winner" are all drawn from that exquisite set, although, in truth, there were stronger tracks to pick from than these. 1980s Sly & Robbie Present (aka Showcase) included nothing but stellar tracks, rounding up as it did his recent singles for the pair. Five of that set"s seven songs are included here, at which point the set backtracks a couple of years to conclude with Isaacs self-produced "John Public." Not everything on this set actually hit, and a few numbers don"t quite qualify as classic either, but the majority of this compilation fits the title, and provides a thrilling overview of this most crucial period in Isaacs career. Of course, there"s much more out there that"s equally sensational, but still this compilation cuts a worthy swath through the thicket of masterpieces from this era. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
