Zoroastre and Zaïs, written around the same time (1749 and 1748), have been treated like two poles. On the one hand, Zoroastre is the darkest tragedy Rameau ever wrote music for. On the other hand, Zaïs is the most graceful and human of his entertainments, but also his lesser-known work despite all the wonders it contains.
