Endangered Species Harp Seal Cold Pack for pain and fever relief! Hi, I"m a Harp Seal (Phoca groenlandica) and I live here, in the Arctic. I"m a marine mammal who likes to swim in the Arctic and the northwest Atlantic Ocean. My young seal friends and I are famous for our snowy white coats, so we all look alike! I was born on the ice flow, and my mom could identify me from all my friends by my smell. When I get to be about 7, my colors will change to a black head, and I will have a black horeshoe or "harp" shape on my back. The rest of my body will turn a pale grey. The "harp" mark is paler and more broken on my female friends- and they stay white longer too- until about 12 years old. I really like to ear yummy fish like herring, cod and capelin, as well as crabs and other shellfish. I also love to swim really fast; in fact I spend most of the year in the sea. I can stay under water for up to 15 minutes. I can dive depths of over 900 ft. We have to be careful though; there are other animals in the ocean that like to hurt us. Sharks, killer whales, polar bears and walruses think we"re good to eat. I am also wicked fast when moving across the ice. I migrate south in the fall and north in the summer, which can be a total trip of 375-500 miles. My friends and I really like to talk a lot, and loud too, especially when we get together with our whole colony during the breeding season.
