For this Candid date, Memphis Slim was asked by producer Nat Hentoff to bring his own men. He showed up with William "Jazz" Gillum, the searing harmonica player who hadn"t recorded in many years and whom Memphis had found in glum poverty. Also in the entourage was the sonorous Arbee Stidham, a guitarist and singer for whom Slim had also been a major source of encouragement. Memphis Slim"s performance was described as "an exciting glimpse of the submerged seven-eights of the jazz iceberg - the kind of rolling barrelhouse piano that has been played, in the colored ghettos for the past 50 years. A tough, rough but subtly intricate music that has grown directly from the life in the slum tenements."
