Stanley Jordan is back! After a string of albums lacking focus, the über-guitarist returns with a live date featuring what he does best: no-frills, tasteful jazz that"s heavy on the guitar pyrotechnics. Live in New York opens with a blazing rendition of John Coltrane"s "Impressions" (Jordan also includes Trane"s "Cousin Mary" later in the set) that highlights Jordan"s amazing technique and shows off the tidy playing of pianist Kenny Kirkland. With a solid band behind him (Charnett Moffett, bass; Jeff Watts, drums) Jordan is free to offer up his high-gloss guitar moves in a rock-solid environment. "Willow Weep for Me," "Over the Rainbow," and his own composition, "Flying Home," are offered as examples of Jordan"s jaw-dropping solo work near this satisfying set"s close. --S. Duda
