As part of Mavic"s Special Service Corsa (SSC) mountain lineup, the Deemax Ultimate is the downhill wheel of choice for Mavic pros. Anytime we come across a downhill wheelset with the Mavic name on it, we expect it must be strong. But the Deemax Ultimates aren"t just your trusty old Mavic wheelset, they also weigh in at under 2000 grams for the pair, with the front coming in at 910 grams, and the rear 1055 grams. In the age of ever-lighter DH and freeride bikes, the Deemax Ultimates certainly fit the bill. The Deemax Ultimates use Maxtal aluminum rims that are 21mm (internal) wide to better accommodate wide tires (Mavic recommends tires sizes from 2.0 to 2.5in) Fore drilling means there are no spoke holes on the inner rim wall so mounting your tubeless setup couldn"t be easier. Mavic kept weight to a minimum in part thanks to their Inter Spoke Milling (ISM) process. ISM is a process in which excess material between the spoke holes on the inside diameter of the rim is trimmed off. From there the rim joint is created with Mavic"s super smooth SUP process, where, after bending, the rim joint is arc welded. The welded seam is then milled for a smooth finish. The Deemax Ultimates also come equipped with buttery-smooth, QRM+ cartridge bearings--Mavic"s finest. The rear hub is micro-adjustable with the included hub tool/tire lever. The FTS-X freehub body is compatible with 8, 9, and 10-speed mountain cassettes. Both the front and rear hubs are made from aluminum, with the rear using Mavic"s Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS-4). ITS-4 uses four pawls that work 2 by 2 with only 7.5 degrees of play before engagement for impressively fast energy transfer. Mavic also machined the hubs using their Spoke Retention System (SRS) to ensure the spoke head is encased and will not pop out of the hub during stress or impact. Mavic used 28 bladed, double-butted, straight pull spokes on the front wheel, and 32 in the rear. Each is laced in a 3-cross pattern that adds strength, durability, ...
