PT-109 belonged to the PT 103 class of motor torpedo boats (MTB) operated by the U.S. Navy, although MTBs were usually called by their hull classification symbol of "PT" ("Patrol, Torpedo") during World War II. ABOUT THE PT109: PT-109 first entered service in 1942, and it was made famous by its last commander, the then-Lieutenant, junior grade (LTJG) and future President of the United States John F. Kennedy. On a on a night mission to intercept the "Tokyo Express" through Ferguson Passage to Blackett Strait in the Pacific, PT-109 collided with Japanese destroyer Amagiri and split in two. The collision left two crewmen dead and several badly injured, and the then LTJG Kennedy led the surviving member of his crew to safety.
