This Mexican trio brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to the Latin alternative movement: their sophomore effort stands as a strong contender for best rock en español album of 2005. Brilliantly produced by Café Tacuba keyboardist Emmanuel Del Real, Jardín shimmers with the infectious power of its jangly guitars and the buoyant humor of the groups" decidedly goofy lyrics. Boasting a guest vocal appearance by Mexican rocker Natalia Lafourcade, the title track"s sweet psychedelic vibe evokes both Tacuba and The Beatles, whereas the lounge undertones and electronic blips of "Viko" will delight fans of nostalgic popsters such as England"s Saint Etienne. The members of Liquits may have a weakness for wide-eyed contemplation, but when they rock (check out the rollicking chorus of "Chido"), their music assumes an electrifying sense of urgency that has been sorely missing from Latin music. Although it contains only 10 songs, Jardín elevates Liquits to the echelons of rock en español royalty. --Ernesto Lechner
