The Lockheed Constellation was first introduced in 1943, and served as a long range troop transport for the U.S. Army Air Force. Only a few were produced during the war, but the Constellation truly came into its prime after World War II as a civilian airliner. The Constellation was the world"s foremost civilian airliner from the end of World War II until newer jet-engine aircraft rendered it obsolete. The final versions were retired from civilian service in 1967, but the military early warning and intelligence variants continued in use until 1982, after nearly 30 years of intense service. Known as EC-121 Warning Stars, several different variants of the aircraft served in a variety of roles. The early use of EC-121s was as a part of the coastal "barrier" forces, to detect and prevent Soviet surprise attacks on the U.S. When the Vietnam War began, the Warning Stars were the primary airborne early warning aircraft and were used throughout the war to warn against both aerial and ground-based threats, gather intelligence on enemy forces, and coordinate and assist combat operations and rescue missions. The EC-121 presented here is the D variant, in classic U.S. Air Force grey.
