The Grumman F6F Hellcat was designed to replace the aging F4F Wildcat, the U.S. Navy"s primary fighter at America"s entrance into World War II. Details from combat engagements between the F4F and the Japanese A6M Zero were sent back to Grumman, who used the data to alter the F6F into an aircraft that was almost universally superior to the Zero. Both the F4F and F6F were rugged aircraft that could take a deal of damage, but engine and other improvements in the F6F allowed the Hellcat to dominate the skies over the Pacific. Like its counterpart, the F4U Corsair, the Hellcat eventually developed into a fighter-bomber role. After World War II ended, the Hellcat was retired from combat service in the U.S. Navy, but continued in use in the French and Uruguayan Navies.
