The Hughes H-4 Hercules, nicknamed the Spruce Goose for its wooden construction, has the greatest wingspan and height of any aircraft ever flown. Officially labeled the HK-1 by its government development contract, the Spruce Goose was designed in 1942 as a response to the U-boat threat that was hampering Atlantic transport capabilities. A number of requirements were placed on the aircraft, particularly that it not be made of metal due to shortages in availability. Piloted by one of its primary designers, Howard Hughes, the aircraft took to the sky in 1947, amid controversy and criticism. The historic flight quelled critics, but the aircraft never flew again. The Spruce Goose remains one of the most famous aircraft to date, and is precisely reconstructed here in this detailed model, something that will be a centerpiece in any collection. About Toys and Models Corporation Since 1982, Toys and Models has created exquisitely detailed, historically accurate replicas of aircraft. New technology and materials combined with painstaking detail ensure that when you purchase a model from Toys and Models, you"ll admire it for years to come.
