The movie Garden State"s story and music have experienced a similar phenomenon, resonating with an age group saddled with the label of mediocrity, but to quote the film, I"m okay with being unimpressive. I sleep better. The film benefits as much from the music in the soundtrack as from the memorable performances and dialogue. In this case, the music is less a part of the story line, and more emotional barometer, evoking the mood on the screen. Perhaps one of the most memorable scenes in Garden State involves the two main characters in a hospital waiting room, one turns to the other and emphatically tells him, You gotta hear this one song, they will change your life I promise you. Which brings us to The State I"m In. A collection of songs featuring more music from some of the artists who appeared on the original soundtrack, as well as several others, that just as easily could have been.
