Filmed at a time when more than half the population of Buenos Aires faced financial ruin, TODAY AND TOMORROW centers around Paula, a 24-year-old aspiring actress trapped in a cycle of unpaid bills and debts. Like most people, Paula tries to get by with the work she can find, but the play she"s rehearsing may never open and her father has grown tired of supporting her marginal lifestyle. To make matters worse, her boyfriend is out of work, the gas to her apartment is being cut off, and she"s four months behind on the rent. When the director of the play offers to help with Paula"s bills if she sleeps with him, Paula turns him down, refusing to risk her independence just to lighten her debt. The proposition does give her an idea, though of another role she can play that just might pay off. Paula calls her friend Claudia, a prostitute, who agrees to take Paula along "on her rounds" for the night. The two set out and meet a variety of clients in quick succession, but Paula"s bargains with men grow more and more dangerous as the night passes.
