Jutta Hoffmann won the Best Actress Award at the 1972 Venice Film Festival for her remarkable portrayal of Margit Fliesser, an emancipated woman who dares to break with social conventions in her quest for happiness. Margit is a single mother in her mid-thirties with two daughters by different men. Looking back on her failed relationships, Margit realizes that her life has been shaped by perceived social expectations and that she has always allowed the men in her life to choose her. Although she is already romantically involved with a woman, a newly liberated Margit decides to win the affections of a male colleague, as lover and a father for her children.
