Pese a que su hermano David odia a su novio Billy por ser un pistolero retirado, Laura accede a que el padre Juan la case con el joven. La pareja vive en casa en donde el Billy se desempeña como capataz. Un día David y Billy se encuentran en la cantina y se enfrentan a golpes y en el forcejeo David saca su pistola. Al tratar de disparar sobre Billy se hiere él mismo. Billy se entrega al comisario para ser juzgado. Laura vacila entre el amor hacia su esposo y su deber de hermana, pero tanto ella como el cura Juan quedan convencidos de la inocencia de Billy pese a que David con la complicidad de un cantinero, logra hacer aparecer a Billy culpable en el juicio. Laura y el cura deciden ir a Chihuahua, a cuya prisión será enviado Billy, para pedir un nuevo juicio. Como necesita dinero para el viaje, Laura pide a David su parte de la herencia. David se la niega y soborna a unos rurales para que apliquen la ley fuga a Billy en el camino hacia la prisión de Chihuahua. The couple lives in the family hacienda, where Billy works as foreman. One day, David and Billy run into each other at the saloon and come to blows. During the struggle, David pulls his gun to shoot Billy but hurts only himself. Billy turns himself in to be judged at trial, and Laura is torn between her love for her husband and her duty as a sister. Both she and Father Juan are convinced of Billy’s innocence despite false testimony by David and a complicit bartender at the trial. Billy is found guilty and is to be taken to the prison in Chihuahua. Laura and the priest decide to go to that city to request a new trial, but David gets in the way and bribes the guards to shoot Billy on the way to the prison as if he were trying to run away.
