The 1977 shock-outrage punk band âRAPEDâ always knew they werenât going to get far with a name like that. So in 1979 they changed their hard name to the softest they could think of â CUDDLY TOYS. The move coincided with them exploring their o.t.t. glam-rock fantasies to the full. Finding a bootleg tape of Bowie & Bolan rehearsing an unfinished song, âMadmanâ they made it their own. Regularly gigging around the UK, the album was released in 1979 but only in Japan, an expensive import until a revamped UK version was eventually issued in 1981. The band went on to a second album âTrials & Crossesâ with a new line-up in 1982. Singer Sean Purcell died in 1996.
