With a multi-car accident beginning while Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick raced to the checkered flag, NASCAR held off a field freezing caution flag. Martin was ahead at the time of the accident, but Harvick edged him out before crossing the finish line; the official margin of victory was .020 second, the closest Daytona 500 finish since Lee Petty"s victory in the inaugural 1959.
