The 1992 Hooter s 500 will forever be known as the race that changed the history of NASCAR for years to come. Not only was this the final race for the King of the sport, Richard Petty, it was also the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race for Jeff Gordon, who at the time was in his rookie season and was still an unknown competitor. The bigger story, however, was that this race was one of the closest championship races in the history of the sport. With only 9 laps to go, Bill Elliot led the race, with Alan Kulwicki close behind. In the end, Elliot took the win, but Kulwicki led one more lap than him, which gave Kulwicki bonus points and ultimately, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.
