This is a superbly illustrated and informative guide to the stunning collections of the Joan Miro Foundation in Barcelona. The most important aspect of the Joan Miro Foundation"s collection is without doubt its selection of works by Miro himself, which number more 14,000 individual items - many of which were donated by the artist when the Foundation was first set up. The works housed in the Foundation span Miro"s entire life, allowing visitors to see his development as an artist - from his training in Barcelona and first contact with the Avant-garde scene in the early 20th century, through the time he spent in Paris with the Surrealists, to the last years of his life when he mainly expressed his vision in large-format paintings that hold a deeper interest in pure colour and gesture than his earlier work. The museum also holds a modest collection of works by other artists, including Balthus, Duchamp, Henry Moore, and Antoni Tapies, brought together as a tribute to Miro after his death in 1983.
