Being Flynn

Original soundtrack to the 2012 motion picture composed and performed by Badly Drawn Boy. Being Flynn is based on a true story, a book by Nick Flynn about his relationship to his father, the self-styled "great writer" Jonathan Flynn. Nick, himself a budding writer, in search of his own identity, suffers from the loss of his mother and the absence of his father, whom he has not seen for 18 years. While working in a shelter for the homeless, Nick again encounters his formidable father, a down-and-out with an alcohol problem whose failures in life have not shaken his self-belief. The 15 tracks include a number of instrumental scores, but the soundtrack kicks off with the ballad-like "I"ll Keep the Things You Throw Away" to a violin accompaniment which provides a romantic touch and shows that the emphasis on guitars is here balanced by a welcome variety of instrumentation. The funky number entitled "The Smile Behind Your Face" has a warm element from the horns, while "Harbor Street" is colored by a strong saxophone section.
