A HORSEMAN IN THE SKYINE sunny afternoon in the autumnof the year 1861 a soldier lay in aclump of laurel by the side of a roadin western Virginia. He lay at fulllength upon his stomach, his feet resting uponthe toes, his head upon the left forearm. Hisextended right hand loosely grasped his rifle.But for the somewhat methodical dispositionof his limbs and a slight rhythmic movementof the cartridge-box at the back of his belt hemight have been thought to be dead. He wasasleep at his post of duty. But if detected hewould be dead shortly after"vard, death beingthe just and legal penalty of his crime.The clump of laurel in which the criminallay was in the angle of a road which afterascending southward a steep acclivity to thatpoint turned sharply to the west, runningalong the summit for perhaps one hundredyards.
