This book is about the history of the publishing of the first complete collection of Leo Tolstoi"s works in ninety volumes edited by V.G. Chertkov and published in 1992-2000. The edition had been in preparation for almost thirty years, and was surrounded with dramatic events almost unknown to the modern public. This book is also about the people who spent their money and lives to preserve Tolstoi"s legacy and bring this project to life: Chertkov (d. 1936), N.S. Rodionov (1889-1960), Aleksandra Tolstaia and her brothers. The book also includes a review of the religious and social views of Leo Tolstoi after 1879 by the author of the book.
