Paul Eluard (1895-1952) is widely considered to be one of France"s most important poets. For too long we have been under the misconception that Eluard is to be read only as a Surrealist, and enjoyed or dismissed as such. But Eluard"s poetic activity was divided into two stages: his exploratory work in poetics as a Dadaist and then as a Surrealist (1919-1938), and his more traditional yet modern post-Surrealist work from 1938-1952. This latter period was for Eluard a time of passionate love and intense political involvement. The marvelous books of "Last Love Poems (Derniers poemes d"amour)" composed during 1946-1951, give us an idea of Eluard"s technical mastery as a mature poet, enabling us to participate in the universality of his poetry, and to understand why he is held in international esteem.
