Tris Apthorp, recovering alcoholic, rescues an infant kidnaped after four deaths and murder attempts upon Apthorp and Apthorp's father, the boy's grandfather and great grandfather. Tris solves the mysteries by risking his life and using skills gained in conquering his illness.
