Winnie-the-Pooh is a popular children's book in Bulgaria. It is also the most popular children's book in the world. This translation of this book into Bulgarian is by Vera Slavova. This translation was first done in 1942 and published in 1945, after the war. Vera Slavova is said to have been a classmate and friend of the great translators, the sisters Teodora Atanasova and Margarita Alexieva. Vera Slavova said in the 1960s no one wanted to translate "Winnie the Pooh" because it was difficult, and she with great self-destruction and even fear took it on. She has done a wonderful translation of the book, because besides the good knowledge of the language, she was also a child's teacher and she knew the child's thinking and the words the children were imagining, just how funky and kind they are mistaken. This translation follows the original book closely. The purpose of this book is to help Bulgarian speakers learn English and to help English speakers learn Bulgarian. To have a translation as close as possible to the original is the most useful. Bulgarian is spoken by 9 million people in Bulgaria and neighboring Macedonia and Greece. It is a Slavic Language written in the Cyrillic script similar to Russian. On 1 January 2007, Bulgarian became one of the official languages of the European Union.
