Impressionism This artistic direction, which originated at the end of the 19th century, was a response to the studio painting. The aim of impressionism was to depict modern life painting in nature. Artists wanted to capture the atmosphere of a particular moment, an unrepeatable moment, the current mood... A picture by Claude Monet called Impression, soleil levant (Impression, the Rising Sun), which was displayed at the exhibition of a group of independent painters in Paris, unexpectedly gave its name to the new style. Critic Louis Leroy considered the picture unfinished; he used the word Imprese pejoratively and nicknamed the whole group the impressionists. The painters accepted the name.
