Rural Non-Farm Sector (RNFS) which has the potential for generation of sizable number of employment opportunities in the rural areas, assumes greater importance. The cooperative movement in India was organized as a measure against rural poverty, aggravated by chronic indebtedness of the farmers and practice of usury at its worst by the money lenders. Loans from cooperative societies were also not enough to enable farmers to improve upon their land and augment their incomes.
