Frederick Boyle was born in 1841. He was educated at Oxford and was called to the bar. His travels included Borneo, Australia, and Central America. He was a newspaper correspondent in several wars. A Good Hater was published in 1885. A sergeant wills his money away from his wife to his benefactor his Major. The sergeant tells of his wife"s guilt and why he has left home. The wife has become quite rich and the Major falls in love with her. There are nuerous plot twists.
