Elizabeth Kaine grows up in poverty on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Envious of her friend Christie Laban whose family runs the estate that provide employment for the men of the village - including Elizabeth"s father, a drunk who beats on her mother - Elizabeth determines that she will one day be as well-off as these wealthy neighbors.
