The advantage of the latter is that it may be shut up without any risk of trucks being sent through the doors, and is also better for storing in; bat it is less convenient for loading from, more especially when a crane is used. The carts either back into a dock, or have a shelter outside. The dock is again more convenient where there is a crane; a height of 12 feet from the platform, or 15 feet 9 inches from the rails to the roof principals, is sufficient for this. The length and width to a great extent depend on the special requirements of the station, but the width should rarely be less than 20 feet, or even 25 feet.
