Mr. Berkley"s method for determining when the amount of stretching of any bar was such as to equal the true elastic limit of the iron, was based upon observing the time during the experiment when the elongations ceased to be uniform for equal additions of strain; and this he considered took place when about half the breaking strain was applied. This conclusion, however true it might be, threw no light on the rule of adopting half that strain only as the safe strain in practice.
