This superb recording of one of Elgar's masterworks, the Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra, is coupled with what Ursula Vaughan Williams described as 'the best recording ever made' of her husband's Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on 'Greensleeves' and three shorter pieces by Elgar (including his charming Serenade) complete a programme in which all the works benefit from Barbirolli's special insight into stringed instruments, resulting not least from his own experience as a cellist. The recordings, made in London in 1962 and 1966, have not been out of the catalogue since their first LP release.
