Josh Dolgin aka DJ Socalled is a young Canadian who has founded a style he calls klezmer rap or Yiddish Hip Hop. This catchy new genre mixes Yiddish spirit and traditions with rap, jazz, electro, Oriental music and rock. Dolgin grew up with rap music but at the same time was immersed in Jewish culture collecting over three thousand records of Jewish music, most of them 78s, from the 1920s, '30s and `40s. He has an innate talent for blending a traditional Hassidic chant with an old school breakbeat, and when he appears with other musicians he systematically steals the show. 'Ghettoblaster' was recorded in a dozen studios and involved over forty musicians. They include older generation musicians such as the 91-year-old pianist Irving Fields, the inventor of Latino-klezmer musicand and the Yiddish singer Theodore Bikel. The new generation is represented by clarinettist David Krakauer (Socalled has been featured on Krakauer's last two recordings), trumpeter Frank London, the Beyond the Pale klezmer group and Quebec rapper Sans Pression. Thanks to their eclectic contributions this album blasts Jewish music out of the ghetto the music industry has shoved it into. Personnel: Socalled - (electronics, composer, arranger, producer), Theodore Bikel - (vocals), Beyond the Paler, Sans Pression - (rap), Irving Fields - (piano), David Krakauer - (clarinet), Frank London - (trumpet), And many others
