Sydney Sheldon’s Master of the Game is the gripping story of six generations of the fictional MacGregor/Blackwell family, in the backdrop of South Africa’s diamond industry and hate-filled vengeance. The author begins Master of the Game by describing the ninetieth birthday celebrations of Kate Blackwell, one of the richest and the most powerful women in the world. The year is 1982. Her father had come to South Africa years ago as a diamond prospector and had struck it rich. Her mother’s father was a crooked Afrikaner merchant Salomon Van Der Merwe. Kate was herself born out of an act of deliberate vengeance. She had buried her past and tried to forget the grim tragedies, deception, hatred, and ghosts of enemies and friends, which haunted her. Her life had been full of blackmail, murder, and hatred all due to greed and ambition beyond belief, greed for diamond, wealth, and women. Kate’s father Jamie MacGregor, a Scotsman, was cheated by Salomon, who is the father of Margaret, Kate’s mother, and left to die in a desert. But he is saved by Banda, the native Bantu servant of Salomon. Banda was also exploited by Salomon and had enough reasons to hate him. The two jointly plan revenge against Salomon. They rob Salomon’s desert mines and become very rich. Later, under disguise, Jamie befriends Salomon again and rapes Margaret. He marries Margaret later, after Kate’s brother Jamie Jr. is born. Margaret takes over her husband’s company after the death of her husband and son. There are many more twist and turns to the story.
