By the 1850s, the British railway system had reached the outskirts of central London, but a ban on further expansion led to construction of the Underground, beginning in 1863. By 1914 the Underground Group ran the main bus company, tram systems, and most of the Tube lines. Posters were utilized to encourage travel both within and beyond the city, and director Frank Pick hired the best artists and designers to create them. Leisure travel outside London was promoted to increase revenue during off-peak periods. Sightseeing within the city was also touted, and posters featuring tours, landmarks, parks, and other places of interest, as well as entertainment venues, invited people to explore London attractions. The thirty-two posters reproduced in this engagement calendar are from the London Transport Museum, one of the finest poster archives in the world.
