The Master Architect Francine Houben, founding partner and director of Mecanoo architecten, is one of the few female architects to have reached a position of eminence in the field of architecture - this has much to do with the particular qualities of her work. In all the work, Houben is building on the immense skill at responding to, accommodating and marking developed over the twenty-five years that Mecanoo has been making buildings. She is bringing this knowledge towards a sensual singularity in form and an acute analysis that produces minimal massiveness. Her assemblage monumentality seems to be a way of space making and space marking in a manner that can help us feel at home in a fast-changing world by combining boundaries with openness. Mecanoo has transformed from the assembling of parts - like its construction set namesake - to forming iconographic buildings for the Netherlands, Europe and - more recently - even for the whole world.
